BUNCEFIELD OIL DEPOT FIRE

Pristine acted as the lead environmental adviser to the principal emergency spill control company during the immediate aftermath of the Buncefield Oil Depot fire.

We developed an emergency containment plan and directed investigations and surveys to assess potential migration pathways for the 30million litres of oil which had been released, while acting as key liaison between the oil companies, the EA and the clean up crews. Once the initial oil containment and storage problems has been resolved, the emphasis switched to how to deal with the 45million litres of fire water run off and solid wastes contaminated by PFOS, a major worldwide contaminant.

Pristine was commissioned by the oil company group as the lead consultant in the assessment of technologies for treatment, which involved acting as liaison between the oil companies, the EA and technical specialists in large scale water treatment. We assessed and compared over 20 different technologies in terms of cost, performance and sustainability to create a short list of three for full scale trial and subsequently oversaw the commissioning of full scale treatment.
